bamboo 14 had arthur casas' architectural firm as curator, and 'scale and illusion' as its theme. we designed a cover full of illusions in the overlapping of images and containing a detail that might go unnoticed: relating the scales of the images, the people are all the same size.
in our proposal this was emphasized by a small insert of le corbusier's modulor, a more obvious reference to the scale.
this issue was the first to have guilherme wisnik as a columnist. his texts on art and architecture, more profound than the magazine's average, would become fertile ground for graphic experimentation in bamboo.
here we see the first page of the summary, featuring wisnik's column on gordon matta-clark (anarchitecure).
on the second page, highlight for the vertical image that breaks the standard structure of the summary, and for the wall, containing le corbusier's modulor.
here we see wisniks's double-page spread column.
as it is a section in which the text is more evident, since this first issue, we've tried to enhance the text by separating it from the images.
the opening of the wall, we see several of le corbusier's sketches of modulor, since the first draft, until its final form.
in each double-page spread of the wall (on illumination), we scaled the lamps, always having the modulor as reference.
with modulor's growth, the design bleeds out of the page.
on the last double-page spread, all was left was the design's graphics.
cover for the fortaleza guide, its module inspired by dunes.
the cover bamboo 15 left us completely unsatisfied, and sorry to have made the proposal to use the cmyk colors.
the proposal we worked with until the last days was to make a cover in kraft (based on the 'wabi sabi' theme).
when this proposal showed itself to be economically unviable, we proposed a cover in two colors: just black and the yellow pantone. this proposal was turned down, and lacking time, this is where we ended up...
on the first page of the summary, we visibly highlighted guilherme wisnik's text, its 'a' following the issue's pantone.
the 10 occurrences of number 5 remind us of the text '50 anos em 5 (50 years in 5)' written by gabriela longman , on kassel's documenta.
in guilherme wisnik's column we tried to enhance the text by separating it from the images, and to create in the title a game that related to the content of the text – exposing the graphic object itself as material.
the module in belo horizonte's guide started from the pampulha church's abodes, designed by oscar niemeyer.
bamboo 16 was about literature, and the cover is one of the cleanest and most abstract.
we used the image of a bookshelf found in the issue, in which all the books have their spines facing the other side, in a way that you only se paper devoid of ink. overlapping the image, we made a pattern of colored rectangles in the magazine's modulation – another bookshelf.
for wisnik's text on cildo meireles, we put the title in loop, using the idea of repetition found in the text and in the artist's work.
for the florianópolis guide we started from a module that drew a wave, and ended up using it as a fragment of typography to write the name of the city.
